Best Image Formats for Websites in 2026

Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page. Getting formats right is one of the easiest speed wins.

Photos and hero images

Use WebP at quality 75–85. Fall back to JPG only if you need to support very old software.

SVG is ideal when you have vector artwork. Otherwise use WebP or PNG with transparency.

Serve images close to the size they're displayed at. A 300-pixel thumbnail shouldn't be a 3000-pixel file.

JPG to WebP

Make photos smaller for the web with WebP.

PNG to WebP

Convert PNG to modern WebP, keeping transparency.

Image Compressor

Shrink JPG, PNG and WebP files without changing their dimensions.
